Covid 19 - winners and losers

The first known case of Covid-19 was identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The disease has since spread worldwide, leading to an ongoing and unexpected pandemic.

Covid-19 will have consequences for a long time.

At the start of the pandemic, China was of course seen as the worst performer. People all over the world were looking at China and were wandering how Chinese people could handle that crisis so badly. The Chinese lockdowns were seen as unacceptable How could this happen? For sure, only a country like China would do something like that. However, a couple of months later, many countries around the world started to use lockdowns just like China did. At this point of time, some countries including Vietnam and New Zeeland were seen as Covid-19 heroes. Their very strict lockdowns and their 0 Covid strategies were clearly working. Then, new strains appeared. These new strains were more contagious and the 0 Covid strategy failed in many countries (interestingly China managed to keep it successfully though). Not only the 0 Covid strategy does not work well with new stains but they are also extremely costly for the countries that decide to go that way. Vietnam has recently announced that it will switch from a 0 Covid strategy to a « living with Covid » strategy where people will get vaccinated as much as possible. Hence, there has been no clear winner of the Covid-19 crisis so far. China has been doing very well but it has also made a lot of enemies.. it might also still be too early to declare the winners and losers of Covid since the pandemic still seems far from over.
